A BUNCH OF STUFF

I copied these from the Sparknotes page for my new video so you wouldn’t have to do the heavy lifting as far as understanding all the deep shit this video was about.

Themes:

Alienation as a Form of Self-Protection - Throughout the video, Harry seems to be distanced from yet interested in the world around him. He annoys those around him with his incessant filming, and he feels trapped on “the other side” of the lens, and he continually attempts to find his way in a world in which he feels he doesn’t belong.

Lighting Cigarettes - During the course of the video several people light cigarettes for themselves and others. This is most likely due to the fact that it lights a subject’s face in an interesting way, but also may be related to a vague fascination with young people passively killing themselves.

The Painfulness of Growing Up - Instead of acknowledging that adulthood scares and mystifies him, Harry edits together a fantasy where adulthood is a non-issue, while childhood extends well into one’s twenties and is a world of innocence, curiosity, and honesty. This serves to explain the brevity of the graduation scenes, when contrasted with the two videos he dedicated to high school graduation. Harry’s experiences, particularly his encounters with Nick Crow and Joey Gaylor, reveal the drawbacks of his methods.

Motifs:

Loneliness - Because Harry depends on his isolation to preserve his detachment from the world and to maintain a level of self-protection, he often sabotages his own attempts to end his loneliness. While he is involved in the presented scenes, he is also very much apart from them.

Relationships, Intimacy, and Sexuality - Relationships, intimacy, and sexuality are also recurring motifs relating to the larger theme of alienation. Both physical and emotional relationships offer Harry the opportunity to break out of his isolated shell. They also represent what he fears most about the adult world: complexity, unpredictability, and potential for conflict and change.

Kelly Meyer’s Breasts and the People Who Touch Them - During the video Kelly Meyer’s breasts are heavily featured. They are touched once by noted homosexual Brian-Keith Hensley by hand and once by her boyfriend Kaveh Akbar with a balloon.

Not at all a simple montage video about nothing. Totally actually really deep and meaningful.
