HELPFUL GUIDE TO THE STRESSFUL EVENTS OF JULY 2011

July 1st - Boss’ last day of work. She hired me back in 2006 and then switched jobs and hired me again in 2009. Now she’s leaving.

July 2nd - Day Trip to SHEDD Aquarium. Drive to Chicago. Pay $30. Look at fish. Drive back.

July 3rd - 4th - Go back to hometown. Visit family. Eat lots of meats and breads.

July 8th - Torchwood comes back. On Starz! With the guy from “O.” So.

July 11th - Friend’s wedding. Dressing up, watching people talk in a church. Drinking in a hotel ballroom with people I haven’t seen since high school. I might wear a bow-tie.

July 14th - Filed Trip to Chicago and The Dunes. Chaperoning high schoolers from Indianapolis with two of my old art professors who may or may not sneak me into a graduate program. I need to buy an impressive-looking book to pretend to read on the bus ride.

July 15th - 18th - My old friend and sort-of room mate (couches aren’t rooms) is coming to visit for the weekend. It is going to be nice to see him but house guests are always a hassle. Plus we’ll have to pick him up from and drop him off in Indianapolis.

Week of July 24th - Say goodbye to friends who are leaving town for-maybe-ever.

July 30th - Move out of apartment. Ideally into an as-yet-undiscovered apartment. Separate from roommates I’ve had for four years. Divide cats accordingly.

July 31st - Homelessness?

Tonight

I got drunk and IM’d people. I felt 15 again.* *I didn’t drink when I was 15 (well, once) but I did IM with wild abandon. Everyone I knew who mattered had AOL Instant Messenger and entire friendships were forged and lost around away messages and blocking. I wonder if Facebook is like that now for middle schoolers. Of course, kids today are all texting. And fucking, probably. I hate everyone younger than me and I always will.

“‘What are you going to do, Rob?’
‘I’m going to drink the rest of a bottle of wine in front of the box. Then I’m going to bed. Then I’ll get up and go to work.’
‘And after that?’
‘Meet a nice girl, and have children.’
This is the right answer.
‘If only it was that easy.’
‘It is, I promise. Next time I speak to you, I’ll have it sorted.’”
